We are passionate about helping you have better relationships through communication of gift ideas for loved ones. We wouldn’t be doing a very good job if we let you spam your friends and relatives, would we?
We have built Giftovus to keep emails to an absolute minimum, while still allowing the right messages to get through. If there’s ever a debate, we decide to err on the side of not emailing people.
There are some pretty obvious touch-points where you may send an email to someone through our system. When you see a modal pop up that looks like this:
You’ll be sending an email out to someone if you use this. If you tab over to the Facebook side of the modal and send a message through there, it will send them a message via Facebook. Facebook may in turn send them an email about the message.
The other time that you may be sending an email to someone is when you interact with an Idea they created. If you love it, or add an Option to it, we send them a note to let them know. We think that’s reasonable since they may want to feel the love and interest in an Idea they created.
We think it is also really important to the people who are members of the Board to know when someone has selected a gift. When an Option is claimed we send everyone in the Board an email. But note – we wait 30 minutes to send that out. Sometimes people click to claim an Option just to see what the button does, then they unclaim it, then claim it…it’s a mess, so we cleaned it up for you.
Finally, there is the comment section on the Idea as shown here:
If you want some help with the Idea and click on the “Ask Friends for Help” button, you’ll see the communication modal again. You may use that to send an email directly to the people you want help from, even when they aren’t a member of the Board yet. If they aren’t a member, they’ll see an invitation to join the discussion as part of your message. To limit emails, we make it so you may only ask for help one time per Idea.
We use a Facebook-style throttling system for emailing out comments. If you created the Idea, or if you interacted with the Idea, you will get the next two comments from others about the Idea in an email.
What if you really want someone to see your comment? Click the “Tag Friends” option. If you click it, it will reveal every person who is a member of the Board. Click on the people you want to get the message and we’ll email them one time as part of the comment. Otherwise they may only see that a comment has been made in a weekly summary.
Side note – You can tag any Option in a comment. This is useful when you are talking about a specific product in your comment – “I think [this product] is too flimsy”.
In all of these areas, we are working to reduce emails. For example, we are working on making it such that if you viewed a comment on the site, you won’t get an email about it. But these things take time.
We also keep automated emails to a minimum. There are two automated emails based on the Boards that you subscribe to:
A weekly summary of all actions that have occurred in all the boards you subscribe to.
A birthday reminders about the board receiver
When you add a board to your Dashboard, you are in effect “subscribing” to the board (you can click “leave” at any time to unsubscribe).
And one final note – you can respond to any email we send you and a human will read it. It’s true. We decided to ditch the “no-reply” email address and instead open a communication channel. If you ever have a piece of feedback, feel free to fire away.
Our vision is to make gifting a fun and bonding experience by providing a simple, convenient way for people to get together, share their initial ideas, and turn those ideas into the right gift, every time.
