Katie Hosseinzadeh was brought to tears when 25 people converged to give her a surprise gift of letters of appreciation for Mother’s Day, and we were delighted to be a part of it.
Why 25 people wanted to give Katie a moving Mother’s Day gift has a lot to do with Katie.
With her first two children (twins!) still in diapers, Katie started a daycare business. Over the next 20 years, Katie raised her own four children and helped take care of 100 daycare kids. Last year, Katie provided around the clock care for her husband who was terminally ill with liver cancer.
This year Katie’s children, Sheila, Sheiva, Sheida and Shayan, wanted to celebrate their mother and the impact she has had on her community.
Through our “Giftovus In Action” program, they asked for our help. Together we developed a number of ideas that would delight Katie. The best of the bunch was to give her a series of “letters of appreciation” from her children and daycare kids wrapped inside a scrapbook with pictures of them as children and now as adults.

We sought out Katie’s former daycare students (we like to call them “Katie’s Kids”) via social networks. They were delighted to help. “I remember being cared for in the best way – a lot of hugs and kisses. There was always a lot of warmth,” said Mia Vancil, one of Katie’s Kids who contributed a letter.

We also sought out contributions from scrapbook artists to make it a community celebration of motherhood. “I read about Katie and really wanted to help. I was really close to my mom and helping make this scrapbook made me feel like I was helping someone else’s mom get closer to her kids,” said Anna Schaffernoth, one of twelve people who contributed support for the scrapbook.
Thank you everyone! It was worth it. Just watch this video:
Seeing Katie’s emotional and joyous reaction was incredible. We felt lucky to be a part of making someone’s Mother’s Day special.
A huge thanks to the thoughtful people who made this special Mother’s Day gift happen:
